The Menin Gate in Ypres is to close for essential restoration work in 2023.
While the exact date is yet to be set, the contract for works is out for tender and should be finalised by mid February.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWCG), who are tasked with looking after this incredible memorial, believe the first set of scaffolding will be erected by mid March.
Eventually the Gate will be completely entombed in boarding so none of it will be visible and visitors will not be able to see the names engraved on the panels.
Undoubtedly, this will be very disappointing for those that wish to find a loved one’s name.
Vehicles will still be able to pass underneath the Gate.
There will be a digital recreation of the memorial located on the ramparts beside the Gate, and the Last Post ceremony will continue each night at 20:00.
If you would like to see the Gate before it undergoes this essential restoration, make your way to Ypres in early 2023 or get in touch with Sophie’s Great War Tours about a special trip soon.
